About
Naomi Fryer is an award-winning Australian writer and director based in Sydney. Naomi’s storytelling centres on female driven stories that seek to reveal new perspectives. Her work explores themes of identity and relationships with a focus on characters in landscape. Naomi is recognised for her visual approach to her work.
Naomi’s filmography includes the short film This River which won Best Direction in an Australian short film at Oscar qualifying Flickerfest International Festival 2021. It has also won best short film at Cinequest Film Festival, best student film at WIFT V-Fest and Canberra Short Film Festival and was nominated for an Australian Director’s Guild Award. It is currently streaming on ABC iView. Naomi’s recent film The Sax has played at Flickerfest International Film festival 2025 and Heart of Gold International Film Festival 2025 and won Best Student Film at Boomtown Film and Music Festival 2026.
Naomi was Screen NSW Directing attachment with Lucy Gaffy on the series Totally, Completely, Fine for Stan directing a scene in episode one. Naomi was honoured to write and direct the Flickerfest tour trailer which was inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.
Naomi has placed in the top 15% in the Academy Nicholls and has been shortlisted for the Sundance Screenwriting Labs. Naomi won the UCLA Joie de Vivre Award for her screenplay Love is at the Centre of Things. Naomi is also completing the Professional Program in TV writing at UCLA currently writing a spec and two pilots.
Inspired by her pioneering filmmaking Grand aunts Naomi is in early development on feature documentary 2 Minutes Silence inspired by their incredible careers. Naomi is also in development on her feature film Undercurrent with Magpie Pictures.
In 2020 Naomi received Screen Australia and Screen QLD funding for the feature documentary Alone. Naomi was also the Australians in Film Charlie’s resident in 2021 and is a filmmaking resident at the Powerhouse Museum.
Naomi is a current Directing lecturer at the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
